In Gratitude to Nabeehah Shakir

I interviewed Nabeehah Shakir on March 1, 2012. I was in the early stages of interviews for The E-Word and was excited to have the opportunity to speak with someone that was “on the ground” when the Resolution was adopted. Our interview lasted for nearly two hours. If I had been more prepared, it would have lasted much longer. She is an institution in Oakland and beyond. This Resolution of the Oakland Alliance of Black Educators attests to her longstanding service. Her steadfast commitment to the Standard English Proficiency (SEP) Program and its legacy endured until her recent passing. I found a clip that only partially captures her devotion to the education of all students.

Her enthusiasm and passion for education continues to inspire me. Nabeehah’s memory should continue to inspire us all.

Thank you Nabeehah.
